Teen Job & Volunteer Fair Teen Job & Volunteer Fair

HC DrugFree's March 8th Teen Fair at Long Reach High School, sponsored by Howard County General Hospital, was a huge success. Over 1,000 high school and college-age teens and 500 parents attended the Teen Fair, seeking opportunities such as jobs, volunteering, camps, classes, and services.

This year, 87 businesses and and nonprofits participated with tables at the Teen Fair. If you were not able to attend the Teen Job & Volunteer Fair this year, you can use this list of Exhibitors to contact them.

Teens were able to talk face-to-face with businesses and nonprofit organizations about jobs and volunteering, and look for camps, and classes, and look into services ranging from Kaplan SAT prep to The Bridal Boutique's Prom Dresses and find out about classes for a DUI citation.

There were 4 workshops, each held twice, in the Media Center: Interviewing Skills and Filling Out Job Applications were offered by Pinnacle Career Resources, while Tips for Succeeding on the Job was offered by Ambassador Protocol. A new banking workshop on Check books and Bank Cards was offered by PNC Bank.

Teens and parents watched two "dress for success" fashion shows held in the Atrium, with emcee, Claudia Bellony, fashion consultant. Models were recruited by Nicole Nussbaum, a junior at Atholton High School. The fashion show illustrated how to dress (and not to dress) for a job interview. There was also a Prom Dress Fashion Show, with prom dresses from The Bridal Boutique and a tux from Hyatt Tux.

Food was provided by the Long Reach High School Boosters Club, and there was a raffle with great prizes, such as a Wii, and iPod with Docking Station, movie passes, a Chick Fil A dinner for 4, and cosmetics baskets!

Volunteer Opportunities-
Volunteering is an excellent way for teens to learn skills and do something wonderful for the community.

Recreational Opportunities-

Teen Centers-
Teens have few safe places to go for fun. Here is one place that is designed to promote self-esteem and to develop life skills.

Teen Anon
www.teen-anon.com
The new Teen-Anon organization just began on October 1, 1999. But if you are a teen who needs help with your use of alcohol or other drugs or your life has become unmanageable because of another teen or adult's use of marijuana, alcohol, speed, cocaine or any other other drug, you can get help right now. Teen-Anon will be based on the 12-steps adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Al-Anon, Alateen and Nar-Anon, but is not affiliated with those organizations.

SADD
www.sadd.org/mission.htm
Does your high school have a SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Chapter?! If not, think about starting one! Find out more about SADD and talk to a teacher or administrator at your school.
