Welcome
Welcome
HC DrugFree is a Howard County, Maryland, non-profit organization helping teens avoid alcohol and other drugs.
|
HC DrugFree offers programs, newsletters and resources to empower parents to raise alcohol and drug-free teens.
Programs
Our programs run from October to April each school year and are for both parents and teens. They provide a forum where parents can discuss topics of substance abuse and learn from each other. Teens are encouraged to attend and participate in discussions, sharing their point of view. HC DrugFree parent initiatives emphasize the critical role that parents have in raising drug-free teens.
Newsletters
An informative Parent Newsletter, The Parent Bulletin (see our Winter 2008 issue), is mailed four times a year to parents of all public high school and middle school students. It is also distributed to Howard county private schools. The Parent Bulletin addresses teen drug/alcohol-related issues, as well as general parenting topics.

Teen Job Fair
HC DrugFree holds an annual Teen Job & Volunteer Fair each year in March. High school and college-age teens can attend the Teen Job & Volunteer Fair to look for jobs, volunteer opportunities, internships, summer classes and camps, and more. We offer workshops on filling out a job application, interviewing for a job, and business etiquette, as well as a "Dress for Success" fashion show. At the 2007 Teen Job & Volunteer Fair on March 3rd at Wilde Lake High School we had 65 exhibitors - businesses, nonrofit organizations and government agencies. View Photos!
Resources
This website has a variety of resources for parents and teens, including links to excellent state and federal websites, news stories, teen central, treatment information , hotlines, school policies and drug use data and statisitcs. Please let us know if there is anything else we can put up to help parents and teens.
Teens & Assets
HC DrugFree supports the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets™ framework, which is being promoted by Howard County Connections. Developmental assets are building blocks for healthy development. The more assets a young person has the more likely they are to succeed in school, assume leadership roles, appreciate diversity and avoid risky behaviors.
Research by the Search Institute shows that developmental assets play a powerful role in preventing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use across diverse samples of youth. The more developmental assets young people experience, the less likely they are to engage in alcohol use, binge drinking, drinking and driving, cigarette use, smokeless tobacco use, and use of marijuana, inhalants and other illicit drugs.
Reducing substance abuse is a challenging issue, which goes far beyond "just saying no" to alcohol and other drugs.
Feedback
We appreciate hearing from parents and teens with stories of things that have happened to their families. Please send stories and anecdotes that you would like to share with other Howard County parents (anonymously) to hcdrugfree@yahoo.com.
